Clocks use a complex & reliable movement that is designed to run for many generations with the appropriate maintenance.

You wouldn't drive a car with no oil or dirty oil because you know it will grind to a hault and create more costly damage to the engine...clock movements are no differ.

Clock oil starts breaking down between 12 - 24 months. Old oil with dirt deposits in it is an abrasive material & will wear down the soft brass parts destroying your clock movement.

CLOCKS SHOULD BE SERVICED AT LEAST EVERY 2 YEARS to avoid this!

We use a 7 step service/maintenance plan:

Remove the clock movement from it's case.
Clean the movement by removing the old dirty oil.
Inspect the gears, pivots, & bushings for wear. A strong indicator that a clock movement needs an overhaul, instead of just a basic service, is when the bushings show extensive wear allowing the gears to turn in an irregular motion.
Re-oil the movement.
Re-install the cleaned movement into it's case.
Adjust & calibrate the clock movement.
Test the accuracy of the time keeping.
